I know we talked about some of the healing items in the game being Hackreich products, and I just had a small idea for early level healing items. Edit: I think that I think i had the idea because we had actually talked about this idea then, therefore it's not completely my idea.
My thought is that the cheapest of the potions and other healing items are mass produced for public consumption and to supply their own forces with. Because of this corners are cut during production to keep costs low. As a result some of the potions aren't the most sanitary.
As an in game effect the cheap medicines would have a small chance of inducing a random negative status effect (Poison, Blind, Paralyze, etc) or a positive status effect (increased strength, defense, etc). And a small chance of both a positive and negative status effect.
And an in game reference to that could be when the party interacts with a TV and there's a commercial for a Hackreich potion that would say something similar to "Garunteed to heal your wounds.... side effects include blindness, paralysis, poison, and in some cases death" with the side effects part read really fast like your average medicine commercial.
